What is Express Entry and how does it work?
Express Entry is an online system IRCC uses to manage applications for three federal immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. You create a profile, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System score, and may receive an Invitation to Apply when your score meets the draw cutoff.
What is the Comprehensive Ranking System and how is my score calculated?
The CRS is a points-based system that ranks Express Entry candidates. Points are awarded for age, education, language ability in English and French, work experience, and adaptability factors such as having a job offer or a spouse with strong qualifications. The maximum score is 1,200. Scores above the cutoff in a given draw receive an Invitation to Apply.
What are Provincial Nominee Programs and can I apply on my own?
Provincial Nominee Programs allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals for permanent residence based on local labour market needs. Each province operates its own streams with different eligibility criteria. Most provinces provide online portals for self-directed applications and do not require a consultant.
What is the difference between a federal draw and a provincial nomination?
A federal Express Entry draw issues Invitations to Apply to the highest-ranked candidates in the pool. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile, virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next federal draw. You can pursue both pathways simultaneously.

What documents do I need to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry?
Required documents include language test results from an approved testing organization, educational credential assessments for foreign degrees, reference letters documenting your work experience, a valid passport, police certificates from each country where you have lived, and medical exam results from a panel physician designated by IRCC.
How long does it take to become a permanent resident through Express Entry?
IRCC aims to process most complete Express Entry applications within six months of receiving them. Processing times can vary based on application volumes and the complexity of individual cases. Incomplete applications or those requiring additional documents will take longer.
Does applying for permanent residence require a Canadian immigration consultant?
No. IRCC provides all forms, guides, and online tools directly on canada.ca. You can create your Express Entry profile, submit your application, and communicate with IRCC entirely on your own. If you choose to use a consultant, they must be a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant licensed by CICC.

What happens after I receive an Invitation to Apply?
After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence through your IRCC secure account. You must upload all required documents, pay the processing fee of CAD $1,365 per adult, and submit biometrics if required. Missing the 60-day deadline means your ITA expires and you must re-enter the pool.
Can I include my spouse and children in my permanent residence application?
Yes. Your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children can be included as accompanying family members in your application. Including them means they also become permanent residents when your application is approved. Non-accompanying family members can be sponsored later through family sponsorship.
